The Los Angeles County Public Health Department indicated that most natural gas in California is composed of methane. (Methane is highly explosive and it can cause death by asphyxiation. It is important to understand how to deal with the hazards associated with methane. If you are in a place where you can detect an unpleasant "rotten egg" smell, the methane levels may be high enough to become explosive.

In high concentrations, methane gas can be deadly when ignited. Natural methane from beneath the earth has caused disastrous mining and oil rig explosions. Although it is non-toxic, methane is a "simple asphyxiant" because it can displace oxygen, which we clearly need for breathing. Oxygen levels that are below 16 percent can be dangerous and levels below 10 percent can be deadly. Currently, there are no standards governing the permissible amount of methane in the air at home or in the workplace, but the minimum oxygen content for any place where people need to breathe is 18 percent.)

The president of the Gas Company addressed the Los Angeles City Council in December 2015, apologizing for the leak as well as their failure to notify the area residents about what was happening, timely. Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer indicated that he was suing the Gas Company due to the way the company had handled the incident. The situation is dire enough that the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ban on low-flying planes above the area of Porter Ranch where the leak occurred. Los Angeles Times, mentioned the planes will likely not be allowed to fly lower than 2,000 feet in the area until the end of March.

Not only has the gas leak caused health issues and displaced residents, it is also posing a serious threat to the surrounding environment. Per KCET-TV’s website, an estimated 50 metric tons of natural gas is leaking into the atmosphere each hour.

Methane, the primary component of the natural gas that is seeping into the environment, is a greenhouse gas that is more potent than carbon dioxide. According to news sources, enough methane has spewed into the atmosphere to equal the greenhouse gas output of burning nearly 1 billion pounds of coal. By the time the leak is controlled, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of metric tons of methane will have likely escaped into the air adding to the health issues and accruing property losses and damages.
